Child Sponsorships:100% of sponsorship monies still go to the children and the children will have more opportunities to develop self-reliance now and for the long term.

Programs:
All our programs are now part of Action Groups! These teams focus on a specific communities of interest in Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay and meet the first Thursday of each month to discuss ways to make the programs there stronger.  These are a blast, so if you’re interested in joining, please email: Action Groups

Micro Loan Training & Business Development: Eagle Condor has a proven track record with Micro Loan Training programs in Peru. We can now add this to our Step 3 opportunities for children who work through school and for families in the communities we serve.
Expeditions: Better than ever helping more areas with combined resources, contacts and projects! Join us!
Interns: Our interns are continuing working one-on-one with children in Trujillo and Cajamarca.  We had our first pioneer intern in Colombia over the past few months and partnered interns will be in Bolivia next month! Thanks to all you humanitarian spirits!

2011 New Year’s Expedition
Excerpt from Facebook posting with permission from Isabella Greulich (Expedition Participant)

“I first traveled to Puyllucana, a small village outside of Cajamarca, Peru. As part of a group of volunteers, I have worked on projects for the ElDec/Jan2011 Bichito (Little Bug) community center for kids. Additionally, we provided school supplies, books and games for the kids and we spent about half… of our time playing, reading and coloring. One member of our group was a dentist who was providing dental checkups/care (with assistance from his two daughters) for anyone in the village. We also organized a New Year’s party on December 31st, which was our last day at the center. While I was watching the kids I could not help noticing how happy they were and how much they enjoyed getting attention and getting in trouble. Really, they were not much different from kids I met in other parts of the world. I am so glad I finally was able to participate in an expedition with Southern Cross!”

New Interns!

Four new interns have arrived safe and sound at the new intern quarters at El Bichito. They have spent time getting to know the chcynthia1ildren and all the surprises the come with so many kids full of energy! Among their first discoveries was how much the children love the memory game, playing “Connect 4″ and their own version of chess.
Give yourself a treat and check out the children’s blog. Here is a sample of just one of the entries:

“Peru itself is beautiful and we have enjoyed pretty great weather here in Puyllucana. We have already explored Banos del Inca, Cajamarca and the mountains just behind our new home. The markets here are always an adventure and the fruit is delicious and ridiculously cheap.”

Action Group HeartbeatsLindsey Marshall
“When people donate their time, they are giving of their valuable heartbeats.”

Lindsay Marshall gets big kudos for creating an “Expedition Action Group” at her high school in Florida. Hopefully we’ll be seeing a number of them this coming summer! Thanks for all you’re doing out there!

Our friends from Canada are now part of the Cajamarca Action Group and have created a new non-profit society called Northern Star. Their group is about 15 strong and sponsoring two children. They also hold bi-monthly fundraisers such as collecting bottles and yard sales to help with economic development for the community. Their creative and earth friendly efforts have raised thousands of dollars. Thanks for all your amazing work!
Our Sacred Valley Action Group reports the following: “The
bathroom and the roof for the classrooms in Huatta are finished. The only things left to complete the job are to cover with “yeso” the exterior of the classrooms and in the bathroom to install the septic tank. Those two jobs are for the community to complete since they already have the materials and the knowledge.”  Yussef Sumar
